Wat Buppharam is a Thai Buddhist temple located at Jalan Perak in Penang. The name Wat Buppharam means "flower temple", and is one of the common names for temples in Thailand. Among the locals in Penang, the Wat Buppharam here is often called Temple of the Lifting Buddha, on account of the century-old Buddha image in the temple. It was founded in 1942 by Phothan Srikheaw, a Thai Buddhist monk, who acted as the first abbot of the wat. Wat Buppharam began as a small temple, but over the years, through donations and gifts from believers, was able to embark on several expansion programs. In the early 2000, it completed its gateway arch, which is one of the grandest entrance arches of a Buddhist temple in Penang. An image of Phothan Srikheaw is found at Wat Buppharam today.

Among the structures in Wat Buppharam is a viharn or prayer hall. The viharn has a chedi linked to it. To the left of the viharn is an ubosot, flanked on either sides by undulating nagas. A short distance behind the ubosot is the rice pagoda, a square-base structure built in the form of a mondop.

Although founded as a Theravada Buddhist temple, Wat Buppharam embraces elements of other faiths from Mahayana to Taoism to Hinduism. Within the compound of the temple are the statues of the Kuan Yin (bodhisattva Avalokitesvara), the Ganesha, the Taoist Earth Deity, and spirit house containing the 4-faced buddha (the Hindu deity Brahma?).

Wat Buppharam is busiest during the Loy Krathong Festival. It is where the procession starts, with devotees bearing the colorful "krathong" or floral offerings, making their way from the temple at Jalan Perak, through Jalan Burma, Lorong Burma, passing Wat Chaiyamangkalaram and Dhammikarama, to Persiaran Gurney, where they are placed in the sea. Wat Buppharam is one of the two temples often involved in the staging of Thai festivals such as Loy Krathong and Songkhran.

Getting there
Wat Buppharam is located at the north end of Jalan Perak. Rapid Penang Bus Nos. 101, U104 and 304 pass by there. The temple is located immediately after Hong Hock See Temple.
Went to this temple few times before when i stay in Penang last time but never got chance to intro it until yesterday when i revisited this temple with heavenlzh. Its good to see this temple again after so many years and hope this thread can provide the info and photo of it for those who are interest at it.

Very nice sivali, 4 face buddha, lersi and some other statue at the area of temple.

Huge buddha statue located inside the place where people put the urn.

Temple area is consider big in this tiny land Penang island, fully equipped with all the structures, it is also a tourist spot.

This is a very famous and interesting lifting Buddha (抱佛). Kneel down infront of it and tell your name, address, DOB with time and your wish then lift it. First time you have to be able to lift up, same wish second time you must NOT be able to lift up then only your wish is granted. Ah Hui tried it, first time can lift up, second time also can lift up but a bit heavier, so dont know what it means, maybe it means ah hui have to work harder to achieve his dream, lol. Ah Hui friend however not so lucky, he cant lift up the buddha for first and second time, the little buddha seems so heavy to him that i saw his hands muscles tensed up as he try to lift up the buddha. After i told him to report his info in details clearly, such as name, address, DOB with time and his wish, then only he success to lift up in second try, but still the buddha look so heavy to him, he just got to try harder to get his dream realize.

This old monk is very nice, can speak in hokkien. He is not the abbot of this temple, the abbot is Archan Khun Nui. He spread holy water, chant out loud and i ask him to chant for my amulet and sakyant at the back. I like to look at this monk, look old, thin and powerful!

This temple is very nice, worth to give a visit if you in Penang. Temple no offer amulet counter, but you can get it from the amulet shop inside of this temple, amulet such as pidta from this temple also can get it there.

Inside of this temple you can seek for monk blessing (spread holy water), thats what i did everytime when i get there, you can try to lift the buddha to see if your wish is gonna realize or not, can also ta bao back the holy water. Its a good place to see since there is not much Thai temple in Penang Island.
